I think I’m all kinds of ok with this!

I wonder if the owner will die an easily preventable death due to their own negligence?

I don’t really get that kind of stuff - seems kinda disrespectful ...

Easily preventable in the context of today. In 2001 head and neck restraints were still new and while the theory was great they hadn’t yet built up the practical results needed to convince people to want to use them. There were 3 drivers in the field of 43 that day who had ever used a neck restraint device before. You can’t really blame him for not being an early adopter when his gear had served him well for 25+ years.

No, it’s a known  thing he didn’t have his restraints fully tightened, because he liked to lean forward and look around.

I can’t find any report stating that his belts were loose (I’m actually finding reports that they were tight enough to give rescuers some difficulty trying to release the belts, the goose neck style latch Dale used tend to be a bit of a pain to release when under tension ) . Dale died of a basilar skull fracture, an injury caused by an over-extension of the neck. Tightening the belts even further only holds the shoulders even more firmly against the seat.

There apparently are multiple reports, but certain reports state that he liked his seat further back, and looser belts so he could look around. The only part about belt release I’m finding is first responders dismissing the broken belt theory.

And the broken belt wouldn’t have affected much as the lap belt doesn’t influence the motion of the upper torso in such a way as to cause a skull fracture. I don’t see a way in which adjusting the belts differently could have improved the outcome.

According to some reports, he liked looser shoulder harnesses, not the lap belt.

Like I said, the lap belt wouldn’t have influenced the motions that create a skull fracture like Dales.
